We kept Chris' birthday low-key this year (as he requested). The boys and I gave him three koi for the pond, and after Chris released them into the water he said "let's get out of here for the day". I'm always ready for some adventure, so I packed a picnic lunch and we were off. We toyed with Westport, Paradise, and Crystal Mountain until I randomly said "how about Olympia?" To which Chris added "okay, and we can go to Cabelas." So we were off!
Cabelas was awesome, despite being super touristy. I found a million things I wanted to buy (mostly in the camping section), but we walked out empty-handed. A John Denver impersonator was performing and he was really good! Even looked just like him too.
We continued on to Olympia. We drove around the city center and evenually found ourselves at Priest Point Park, where we had lunch. Owen found a squirrel to chase, which kept him entertained. I didn't take the camera (which is a first for me) so I didn't get any pictures from the day.
We eventually made our way home with two sleepy boys. The day couldn't have been better, and I'm so happy that Chris suggested a spontaneous adventure. We also fell in love with the Olympia area, so we'll head back soon!

I find that sometimes a camera-less trip makes me be more IN the day then I normally would be. Occasionally it is a really good thing. Glad Chris had a nice birthday!
I agree! I found that I got to enjoy my family for the day as opposed to watching them through a camera lens. And now we have an excuse to go back, because I found some things I'd like to take pics of.
