Backpacking Europe

I wish this post was about me, but it's not. My sister is currently backpacking her way through Europe and she's having a grand time. She spent the summer working in the Mediterranean and was able to make arrangements with Holland America to fly home a month after her summer contract ended, rather than right away.

I bought her The Bible. Not the church version, but the Lonely Planet version. When I backpacked across Europe, I referred to my LP guide as The Bible. And I lent her my beloved backpack. And because the internet is wonderful, she's already been able to share tons of pictures. I pulled out a couple of my pictures for comparison. And here are a couple of then/now pictures of the Roman Colosseum. It looks the same, of course! Our cousin Charlie (who lives in Brussels) flew to Rome for 5 days to meet up with Laura. They were able to spend a day in Anzio, where my grandpa landed during WWII. From there, Laura and one of her friends headed north to Venice for a couple of days, and then they moved on to Gorizia (northeastern Italy, on the Slovenian border) to visit Uncle Dario. Dario lived with my dad's family as an exchange student when my dad was in high school, so we consider him an uncle. I was able to stay with him for 3 days when I was in Italy, and he spoiled me rotten! It sounds like he showed Laura and her friend a great time as well.

Laura is in Amsterdam now and will be heading to Brussels soon. From there she will make her way to London to spend some time with Louise (our Australian "sister" who stayed with my family as an exchange student in high school). Part of my backpacking journey included Louise, who was living in Barcelona at the time.

To add to all this traveling excitement, Laura just signed a couple more contracts with Holland America. She'll spend November in the Caribbean, and will be heading to South America. The ship will sail around the entire continent for 66 days and even stop in Antarctia. And after that, she'll head to Africa and back to the Med.

Kind of makes my upcoming trip to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean seem incredibly boring.
