Our road trip continued north along the Oregon Coast (Highway 101). We woke up to overcast skies at our Harris Beach campsite but the clouds and fog quickly burned off. We packed up and headed out around 10am. We stopped by the beach so the dogs could have a quick run while Owen played in the sand. The plan was to make it to the Newport area by 6pm to find another spot to camp. Other than that, we just drove and stopped when we saw something interesting. I love lighthouses so we made sure to stop when we saw one. Here's a picture of the Cape Blanco lighthouse. As you can see, the weather was gorgeous.

Before I go further, I should mention Owen's new car game. At some point during the long drive to California, we heard muffled giggles from the backseat. We turned around to see that Owen had covered his head with his blanket. Chris and I played along and said "oh no, where did Owen go?" The little goofball quickly pulled the blanket down as if to say "here I am!" This game continued off and on throughout the drive and provided lots of laughs for us all.
We stopped at another lighthouse and at several picnic areas and parks until we reached Newport around 6pm. We checked out South Beach state park but weren't impressed, so we continued north to Beverly Beach. I remember staying there with my family when I was little. We liked it much better so we found a spot to set up our camp. Once we were finished, we headed back into Newport for food. Like I mentioned in our previous post, we packed pretty minimal and most meals had consisted of quick sandwiches and fruit. Warm food was sounding good, so we hit Izzy's Buffet. Result: stuffed tummies and gas for Chris. Yep, Chris had mad rancid gas, and he was more than happy to share the joy once we were settled into the tent that night. We'd checked the forecast before heading to bed and saw that rain was predicted for 6am. Around 4am, a huge thunderstorm hit and hovered right over us for several minutes. Luckily, Owen slept through the entire thing. It rained for a few hours, but we stayed warm and dry. Chris and I were talking about it this morning.. neither of us can think of a time where we've camped during a thunderstorm. It was exciting.
Plans for today.. continue north and head for home!
